What Is a Milling Inserts?

 

CNC milling insert is a replaceable cutting tool tip used on CNC milling cutters (like face mills, end mills, and other indexable milling tools).

 

Structure

Material: Usually made of carbide, cermet, CBN (cubic boron nitride), or PCD (polycrystalline diamond), depending on the work piece material.

Shape: Comes in various geometries—square, round, triangular, rhombic, octagonal, etc.

Coating: Often coated with TiN, TiCN, Al₂O₃, TiAlN, etc., to increase hardness, reduce friction, and improve heat resistance.

Function

Mounted onto a milling cutter body using screws or clamps.

Each insert has multiple cutting edges. When one edge wears out, the insert can be rotated (indexed) to a fresh edge.

Designed to handle different milling operations like face milling, shoulder milling, slotting, profiling, and contouring.

 

Advantages
